The Essex Way – there and back!

Maureen Roberts and her sister walked the entire Essex Way in both directions

One of the delights sparked by our Essex Way competition was the multitude of stories it brought to light.
Here we share the words and pictures of Maureen Roberts, who took a host of photos on her phone…

“My sister and I completed the Essex Way walk from Epping to Harwich during 2021 lockdown. We walked once a week every Wednesday and as we got further from home in Ongar our husbands would take it in turn to drop us off and pick us up.
“We started it in April and finished it in June, walking through all types of weather!! It was quite cold in April, starting off with hats and gloves. When finishing in Harwich in June, it was a baking-hot day!
“We then decided to do the walk backwards!

“We started in Harwich in May 2022, which was a very cold day by the sea! We finished in July. The weather was very kind to us this time and we only got caught in one heavy downpour but soon dried out.
“We had an amazing time doing the walk together, making memories that will stay with us forever.
“I saw the competition advertised so decided to submit these photos. I have so many and they all mean something to me.
“It is such a shame to see so much land along the way acquired for development – some right up to the edge of the Essex Way footpath.”
